My Trip Book

User Ratings: *****

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 - 2 foot by 4 foot sheet of poster board
  • 2 maps of your vacation area ( 1 map for the book cover and 1 map to use on the trip)
  • Safety scissors
  • 9 inch by 12 inch pieces of heavy-duty construction paper
  • 1-hole punch
  • Fabric glue
  • Glue stick
  • Craft foam letters
  • Colored markers
  • Shoestring
  • Pencil
  • Crayons

HOW TO DO IT

  • Cut out two 6 inch square pieces of poster board.
  • Cut out two 7 inch square pieces from one of the maps.
  • Cut out two 5 1/2 inch square pieces of heavy-duty off white construction paper.
  • Cut out several 5 1/4 inch square pieces of heavy-duty off-white construction paper (Cut one sheet for each day of the trip.)
  • To make the front book cover, use a glue stick to adhear one map square to one side of the poster board square.
  • Fold the excess to the other side of the poster board and glue to secure.
  • Place one of the 5 1/2 squares over the inside of the book cover and glue to secure.
  • Repeat this process for the back of the book cover.
  • Use a 1-hole punch to make holes in the front and back book covers as well as all of the interior 5 1/4 inch sheets.
  • Thread a shoestring through the holes, tie to secure and finish with a bow.
  • Just before you leave on vacation, help your child write the vacation destination, the dates of travel and who is going on the first page of the book.
  • Have them record something about the trip each day. It could be a thought, a picture or a small souvenir.
  • After the trip is over, kids can revisit their Trip Book and insert photos from their trip.

TIPS

  • If your child is very young, you might want to place this book, along with other mementos, in a memory chest to bring out when they are a little older. They will love to see the things they experienced when they were youngsters.

FOLLOW UP FUN

  • Plan an imaginary trip with the kids. Anything from a theme park trip to an adventure in outer space. Make fantasy trip books and let the kids' imagination run wild!
