User Ratings: Not Rated

Help your child make this cute scrapbook for special summer mementos, snapshots and drawings.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 pack of Google Eyes (available at craft stores)
  • Sheets of blue, red, yellow, orange and green craft foam
  • Safety scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • 1 sheet of coarse sand paper
  • Paint pen
  • 1 hole punch
  • Key ring or narrow ribbon
  • Colored markers or crayons
  • Disposable camera

HOW TO MAKE IT

  • Print out templates. Template1. Template2.
  • Cut out the book cover pieces from appropriate colors of craft foam as indicated on the templates.
  • Cut out 2 – 5 1/2 inch square pieces of light blue craft foam for the front and back covers.
  • Using a hot glue gun, help your child assemble the pieces of the sun, adding the google eyes and the smile with a black felt tip marker.
  • Cut a piece of coarse sand paper to measure 5 1/2 inches wide by 3 inches high. This will be the sandy beach so cut the top portion of the sand paper unevenly to give it a natural look.
  • Glue the craft foam 'ocean' strip behind the sand paper. Position them onto the bottom portion of the book cover and glue in place.
  • Place the umbrella, pail, shovel and towel in the sand and glue in place.
  • Glue the sun up in one corner of the sky making sure that you have left enough room for your title.
  • Using a paint pen, write the words "Summer 2006" across the front cover.
  • Use the template to print out several scrapbook pages onto card stock or construction paper.
  • With a 1-hole punch, make holes in each page where indicated.
  • Assemble the covers and scrapbook pages and fasten them together through the punched holes with a small key ring or narrow ribbon.
  • Remind your child to collect mementos throughout the summer to paste in his or her "My Summer 2006" scrapbook.
  • Your child can draw pictures representing Summer destinations and activities. You can also have a disposable camera handy for snapshots of special moments.
  • Start the book with a picture taken at the beginning of the Summer and finish with the picture taken at the end.

TIPS

  • Adapt this book cover to other summer destinations or activities. If you will be spending time at a lake or by the river, keep the book cover background blue replace the umbrella pail and towel with a small boat, fishing pole and jumping fish.
  • If you want to make a larger book, enlarge the templates at your local copy store.
