Click here for Let's Go Shopping List

What You Need

  • Let's Go Shopping List
  • Crayons or washable colored markers
  • Colorful stickers (optional)

How To Make It

  • Print out the Let's Go Shopping List from the link above.

What To Do

  • Tell your toddler that the two of you are going to go to the market to buy food.
  • Sit down with your toddler and the Let's Go Shopping List and talk about each of the brightly-colored images on the list.
  • Decide together which of the foods you will buy and help your child make a mark with a crayon, marker or sticker in the space next to the picture of the chosen food.
  • Take the Let's Go Shopping List with you so that the two of you can match the chosen items on your list to the foods in the market.
  • If your market has junior shopping carts, your child can push her cart next to yours and help shop.
  • Locate one or two of the items on your list that are within her reach such as a small block of cheese or a loaf of bread, and ask her to place them in her cart.
  • Once you are home, talk about each food item as you both unpack and put away the groceries.
  • Now that you have finished your busy day at the market, offer your toddler a snack that you choose together from the healthy foods on the Let's Go Shopping List!

It is very important to let children help you with shopping. They learn what products are and it teaches them how to choose the best ones for their health. @JuicyJuiceUSA Bunch member

My son loves to grocery shop with me and identify various fruits and veggies and I have found that this is one of the best ways for him to keep on eating these healthy foods is to have fun before we have taken them home, I need to grocery shop with him more often, actually we are probably going to go this weekend! I think this is a great activity to help kids understand the foods they eat and get them more involved in the kitchen. I think it might be a little much for a toddler to understand, probably better suited for preschool age, but it doesnt hurt to start at a young age. My boys love to help with the shopping, and having their own shopping lists got them even more involved in the process. They loved it! @JuicyJuiceUSA Bunch member.

This is a great idea. I try to go shopping as much as possible on my own without the kids, but we talk to the kids about what is healthy and not and have gone over the food pyramid. I am planning on printing this out and having my kids use to go pretend shopping at our house. They will have a lot of fun and learn about what foods they should eat.

My son loves to help me at the grocery store. We spend a lot of time in the fruits and vegetables sections identifying the different kinds and talking about where they originate from tree, ground, etc. I will tell him what fruit we need and then ask him to find them. Its a great way to have your children be involved and therefore not melting down and they are more excited to eat what THEY picked out when you get home! @Juicybunchmember

I always write a grochery list and love the idea of a picture list for toddlers. Shopping with a tot is fun if you only have a few items to get. I usually leave my 2 year old at home when I am getting my big run of grocheries for a 10 day time span. This way I can read labels and make healthier desicions without feeling rushed.
