What You Need
  • Magnetic white board (available at office supply store)
  • Dry-erase white board markers (available at office supply store)
  • 1 roll each of blue, green and red, 1/2 inch wide plastic tape (available at office or hardware stores)
  • NESTLÉ JUICY JUICE bottle caps (1 for each activity)
  • 1-inch round magnets (1 for each bottle cap)
  • Craft glue gun
  • Patches and stickers representing the fitness activities you have chosen. For example: soccer and basketballs, jogging shoes, tennis racket (available at craft stores)
How To Do It
  • Have a meeting to decide which fitness activities your family will concentrate on. Some members of your family might concentrate on organized sports, such as baseball, football, soccer, etc. Others will prefer fitness activities like jogging or walking the dog. You can also include "active chores" like yard work or washing the car.
  • Print out the chart diagram.
  • Following the diagram, use the colored plastic tape to divide the white board into sections.
  • Use one of the dry-erase markers to write your family name across the top of the board. Call out the days of the week above each section across the top of the board and list each family member along the left side (see diagram).
  • To make the activity magnets: Glue one round magnet to the top of each bottle cap. Glue one of the activity patches or stickers to the other side of each cap. Apply the glue around the bottom edge of the cap and set the patch or sticker onto the glued area. It's OK if the patch extends beyond the edges of the cap.
  • Hang your Family Fitness Chart in an area that is easy for all members of your family to access.
  • Encourage each member of your family to participate in at least one fitness activity each day and post the appropriate magnet next to his or her name.
Tips
  • Create several magnets with gold stars on them for the family members participate in more than one fitness activity on a given day!
Follow-Up Fun
  • Now that your family has started a fitness program, start talking about the importance of good eating! Your kids can learn about the Food Pyramid and enjoy this fun lunch: Muffin Tin Lunch
  • Learning to eat and enjoy vegetables is a challenge for some children. Learning about them, growing them and cooking with them will help enlist even the most skeptical eater! See V is for Vegetable, Grow a Mini Herb Garden and Juice Box Garden Stakes.
