Dad's Day Breakfast BBQ

User Ratings: *****

A Breakfast BBQ leaves the rest of the day for Dad to play real golf, or go to the game!

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Backyard barbeque or barbeque at your local park
  • Charcoal
  • NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE Mini Morsel Pancake batter (see directions below)
  • Outdoor Egg Scramble (see directions below)
  • Packages of bacon and sausage
  • Frying pans and skillets that can be used on an outdoor barbecue
  • Spatula
  • Chilled NESTLÉ JUICY JUICE (in boxes or plastic bottles)
  • Thermos of hot coffee
  • Thermos of hot NESTLÉ NESQUIK
  • Cooler with ice
  • Paper plates
  • Paper napkins
  • Paper cups (hot and cold)
  • Plastic knives, forks and spoons
  • Plastic or paper table cloth
  • Beach or folding chairs (if you are going to the park)
  • "Happy Father's Day" Banner (see directions below)

HOW TO DO IT

  • About 2 weeks before Father's Day, gather representatives of the families that are participating in the surprise Breakfast BBQ for a planning meeting.
  • Choose the backyard or park location for the Breakfast BBQ.
  • Plan the menu. We have included some of our favorites, but you may have your own ideas.
  • Pick the time that each family will arrive with their Dad.
  • Decide what each family will do to make the day a success. For example: One family might be assigned all of the paper goods, one family could bring the drinks, one family the pancake batter, etc.
  • You should also assign chefs, servers and a cleanup brigade.
  • Pick a day prior to the Breakfast BBQ when all of the children can get together to create the "Happy Father's Day" banner.
  • Sit with the kids to write an "invitation poem" that the kids can read to Dad that morning. Here's an example:
    • Get up, get up, Mr. Sleepy Head.
No time to waste lying in bed!
A special breakfast is planned for you.
And lots of our friends' Dads will be there too!
Bacon and eggs sizzling on an outdoor grill
Will wake up your taste buds and give your tummy a thrill!
We planned this party to honor you on your day.
So let's all get ready to eat and play!

  • Early on Father's Day morning, before all the Dads are up, hang or install the banner. This could be the job of the host family, or if you have chosen a park, you should assign this to someone at your initial meeting so that they can be there early.
  • Have the children wake Dad up with a cup of hot coffee or his morning beverage of choice.
  • Once everyone is dressed, pile Dad into the car and escort him to the Breakfast BBQ.
  • The chefs might already be at the grills cooking the bacon and sausage so that the hungry Dads can start enjoying breakfast right away!
  • Set up a craft table to keep the kids busy while breakfast is cooking. This is a great opportunity to make an instant Father's Day gift like "Day to Remember" Father's Day Frames.
  • After the Dads have enjoyed all of the good food and everything is cleaned up, invite everyone to play Backyard Mini Golf.
  • Before everyone departs, let all of the children present their dads with the Father's Day gifts they made at the Breakfast BBQ.

"Happy Father's Day" Banner

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 - 8 foot length of butcher paper (available at craft stores)
  • Pencil
  • Poster paints
  • Paint brushes
  • Crayons
  • Colored marker pens
  • Masking tape

HOW TO DO IT

  • Cut an 8 foot length from a roll of butcher paper.
  • Place the butcher paper on a smooth surface such as the garage floor.
  • Use a pencil to write "Happy Father's Day" across the length of the paper.
  • Let the children paint the greeting with poster paints and paint brushes.
  • Help each child write his or her Dad's name on the poster with any special Father's Day wish they want to add.
  • They can continue to decorate the banner by adding a fun border or anything that reminds them of Dad. For example: golf clubs, fishing poles, skis, etc.
  • Let the banner dry overnight.
  • Roll the banner carefully if you are transporting to another location.
  • If the Breakfast BBQ is at someone's home, install the banner over the front door using masking tape to secure.
  • If the Breakfast BBQ is at a park, install the banner across the long edge of one of the picnic tables using masking tape to secure.

TIPS

  • If you choose a park location for your Breakfast BBQ, see if you need to reserve an area ahead of time. If there are no reservations, send the "chefs" and other helpers to the park early to secure a barbeque and tables.

FOLLOW UP FUN

  • This Breakfast BBQ makes a great annual event. Start a Dad's Day Memory Book filled with pictures taken each year of the whole group and each father and child.
