What You Need
- 2 square packing boxes (suggested size: 24x24x24 inches)
- 1 rectangular packing box (suggested size: 24x20x48 inches)
- Packing tape
- Utility knife (DO NOT USE NEAR TODDLER)
- Washable crayons or nontoxic, colored markers
How To Make It
- Print out the cardboard village suggestions.
For the Crawl-Through Box:
- Use a 24x24x24-inch square packing box.
- Tape closed the top and bottom flaps of the box.
- Cut out arches on each side of the box large enough for your toddler to crawl through (Make sure your toddler is not close by while you are using the utility knife).
For the Sit-Down Box:
- Use a 24x24x24-inch square packing box.
- Tape only the bottom of the box closed.
- Lay the box on its side with the top flaps open so that your toddler can crawl in and sit down. (If your box is not quite big enough for your child to sit in, cut a hole in the top large enough for your toddler to pop her head out.)
For the Stand-Up Box:
- Use the 24x20x48-inch rectangle box.
- Tape only the bottom of the box closed.
- Cut out an opening large enough for your child to crawl in and out of the box.
- Make a smaller opening just above the entrance so that your toddler can peek through when inside.
- Leave the top of the stand-up box open so that she can look up and you can peek down at her!
- Decorate your village together using the washable crayons and non-toxic colored markers. You can lead the way, but give your little one the opportunity to add her artistic talents to the project.
How To Play
- Now that you and your toddler have created a village, it's time to explore.
- To begin, encourage her to explore the village. Ask her to crawl through, stand up, sit down and peek out of each part of the village.
- When she is inside you can say, "Where are you?" When she peeks out a window or other opening say, "There you are!"
- Furnish the inside of one of the boxes with a basket of little toys or stuffed animals for her to play with.
- She will love playing "house" and showing her favorite "teddy" how to peek out of the window just like she does.
