WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 - 20 by 30 inch sheet of poster board or foam core
  • 1 pack of alphabet stencils (available at craft stores)
  • Tape measure or long ruler
  • Safety scissors
  • 4 packs of white Velcro® self-adhesive stickers
  • Caps from NESTLÉ JUICY JUICE 64 oz. plastic bottles
  • Colored permanent markers
  • Craft foam sheets in assorted colors
  • Craft foam self-adhesive shapes

HOW TO DO IT

  • Print out the calendar diagram.
  • Use the diagram as a guide for laying out the calendar onto the poster board.
  • Trim the outside of the calendar with 1 1/2 inch strips of colored craft foam.
  • Cut out 12 - 17 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch pieces of craft foam, one for each month of the year, and apply Velcro®to the backs of each.
  • Have your child write out each month across the length of craft foam using alphabet stencils and decorate around the edges using craft foam shapes or colored markers.
  • Suggest that each month have a theme. For example, autumn leaves for September, or snowflakes for December.
  • Cut one oval out of red craft foam (or any color that you choose) and use it as a template to cut out 30 more, one for each day of the month. (31 total)
  • Use a black permanent marker to write the numbers 1 through 31 on the front of each oval.
  • Apply one Velcro® self adhesive sticker to the center of each day on the calendar and one to the center back of each oval.
  • Decide what activities are ongoing and are important to keep track of. For example: soccer practice, dance lessons, Sunday school, special birthdays.
  • Decorate the inside of NESTLÉ JUICY JUICE caps with pictures representative of each of these activities or important occasions. Use magazines, photos or newpapers as a resource.
  • Apply a Velcro® dot to the back of each one of the decorated caps. Apply them to the day of the week that they will occur instead of the red oval number.

TIPS

  • Remember this rhyme:
    30 days has September,
    April, June and November.
    All the rest have 31,
    Except February with 28
(or in a leap year 29)!

  • Keep a container or bag near the calendar for the extra day shapes and activity caps not currently being used.
