Expert Advice for Kindergarten

Our son is a terrific speller.  I'd like to encourage him with quizzes and bees.  Any ideas?

- Lisa, Dallas, TX

Debbie Drown, Educator, Principal, says:

Building spelling skills is always a good idea.   But be careful not to dampen his enthusiasm with too many drills or quizzes.  Make a spelling bee fun by playing "Spelling Baseball".   Draw a baseball diamond on a piece of paper.   For each word spelled correctly the player gets to move one base.  You can also make more difficult words worth more bases.   This game can be played with other members of the family or with friends who also like to spell.  Depending on the time of year, the game could become "Spelling Football" or "Spelling Soccer".   When the weather is good, play outside with actual bases.

When studying spelling words with my son we take turns quizzing each other words. Then it's more like a game with us both involved then it is homework with me forcing him to spell word after word.
