Expert Advice for Kindergarten

My 5-year old son has inherited his granddaddy's artistic bent. You can give him toilet paper tubes and he'll make action figures out of them! I encourage his creativity, but I wish he'd get more exercise. He'd rather draw pictures of kids playing catch than go out in the yard and play a game himself. How can I get him to put the crayons down and pick up a ball?

Debbie Drown, Educator, Principal, says:

How wonderful that your son has artistic ability. You might want to try to combine some physical activity with art projects. Plan a family outing, (bicycling, playing catch, walking) for the purpose of completing an art project upon your return home. A different family member may want to choose the activity each time. Prepare all the materials for drawing, painting, sculpting, etc. and explain to your son that when you return from your activity you would like him to record the day in art. He may even want to start an art journal to record each family activity.
