Expert Advice for GradeSchool

My oldest of 4 children will not eat ANY veggies and it is affecting my 5 year olds eating habits. How do I get my 9 year old to eat veggies?

- Becky, Myrtle Beach, SC

Debbie Drown, Educator, Principal, says:

There are several things that you could try:

  1. Explain that not eating veggies is not an option, but that he/she may have a choice of veggie each night.
  2. Have a fun veggie tasting night where you child gets to choose his/her top three or four veggies. Loving the veggies isn't necessary, just liking them okay is enough.
  3. If your child decides that he/she wants green beans every night, that's okay. At least it's a veggie. Gradually try to work others into the menu.
  4. Let your oldest help plan the menus. Ask him/her to determine which veggies would be best for the younger children based on the nutritional value.
  5. Make desserts conditional, based upon how many nutritionally sound items your child eats.

My daughter refuses to eat any veggies or fruit, and telling her its not a option , she must eat it, helps nothing!!!!!!! Shell sit there with her mouth closed for hours, am AI now suppose to force her mouth open and stuff the veggies in. She is a real fussy eater.
