Expert Advice for Toddler

My daughter is almost 9 months old and she is not crawling yet. She gets into a crawling position but then goes down on her belly and pushes herself backwards. She can't seem to get the hang of crawling or even wiggling forward on her belly. My nephew is a little older but he started crawling very early and started walking at 8 ½ months, which is my daughter's age now. Should I be worried?

Jeff Winckler, Educator, Father, says:

I think this is developmentally appropriate for a 9 month old. All of these attempts at movement are signs that your daughter is heading towards the crawling stage. Her posturing is on target for her age. I wouldn't be too concerned when comparing her to your nephew. Different children crawl and walk at different times. Walking at 8 ½ months is very early. It won't be long before she is crawling and when she does, get ready. You'll be chasing her everywhere!!!!

My son is 8 months and isnt crawling. He gets on his tummy too, almost like a game, and expects to be put upright again. He CAN get down from chairs. Once hes standing there, he seems almost lost at what to do next. He works himself around, but isnt even close to crawling. Lazy is definitely a word for it. And if he can get around without having to, it doesnt surprise me that he doesnt

I agree, everyone is different! When I was six months, I loved to stand and walk holding on to my mom. I never crawled. My little one is crawling, but only backwards. If everything else is great and healthy, I wouldnt worry about it.

My daughter did not crawl until the was 11 months and walk until she was 15 months. My son however just turned 8 months and is free standing. Every one is different!!!
