Expert Advice for Toddler

How much water does a toddler need to drink every day?

- Lucy, Cleveland, OH

Carol A. Savage, M.S., R.D., Registered Dietitian, Mother of Two, says:

The Institute of Medicine recommends 4 cups of water a day for a 1- 3 year old and 5 cups for 4 year olds. Offer water instead of additional juice and fruit drinks. When you go out to eat consider water and milk as beverage choices and offer water when your child is thirsty in warm weather or after exercise or sports. This way they will become used to drinking water on a daily basis.

With all the focus on 8 glasses a day it's nice to finally learn how much water my children should be consuming. Thanks for the help!
