Expert Advice for GradeSchool

Time-outs have always been effective with our daughter. But she turned 9 this year, and now she just rolls her eyes at me. How can I convince her that I'm serious?

- Dwight, Sterling, CO

Jeff Winckler, Educator, Father, says:

Perhaps it's time to try some alternatives to time-outs. At age nine or older, a child may decide they are "too big" for time-out because "it is for babies and little kids." Tailor the method of discipline you choose to the individual child.  You want to impose consequences immediately following the child's behavior. You may want to remove privileges or objects that you can control.
