Expert Advice for Preschool

My 3-year-old son is very attached to me. He would rather play games with me than with kids his own age. How can I encourage him to make friends?

- Natalie, Pinole, CA

Debbie Drown, Educator, Principal, says:

Inviting other children over for play dates is always a fun idea. At first you may include yourself in the friends playtime, gradually decreasing the time that you're involved. Then, tell your son that he will have a certain amount of playtime with mommy in the afternoon, but first he will have playtime in the morning with friends. During his playtime with you, let him tell you the things he liked best about his time with friends. Gradually increase the play time with friends. At some point, let him choose the friends that come over to play.
