Expert Advice for Toddler
My husband and I have started a vegan diet. Is it safe for our 8-month old twin boys?

Carol A. Savage, M.S., R.D., Registered Dietitian, Mother of Two, says:
It may be a little more challenging, especially as they become toddlers. In addition to receiving an iron-fortified formula or breast milk you will be introducing plant sources of nutrients. Your twins may not be able to get enough calories and protein from plant foods alone and may need a vitamin supplement to get the required amount of iron, calcium, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and zinc. It will take planning and knowledge about good nutrition to design a healthy vegetarian diet for your twins. If your vegan diet allows eggs and or milk and dairy products it will be easier than if you are following a strict vegetarian diet. Seek the services of a Registered Dietitian through your local hospital or through your healthcare provider to offer you guidance in planning a good vegetarian diet.
