5 Simple Games to Boost Your Child's Immunity

User Ratings: Not Rated

Get moving together for better health.

Here's some good news from health professionals: Having fun at play helps kids stay healthy!

"Exercise will enhance the health and well-being of a child on all levels: physical growth, strengthened immune system and better emotional and mental health," says health and wellness expert Joe Sarti of Palo Alto, California.

The Power of Play

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children get at least one hour of moderate to vigorous exercise daily. Here's why:

  • Exercise improves heart and lung function and increases muscle and bone strength, making injuries less likely.
  • It also strengthens the entire body, which builds immunity or the ability to fight off illness.
  • Activity reduces stress and improves mental and emotional function and stability.
  • Children who are physically active are more likely to be motivated and alert in school.
  • Kids who are engaged in group activities also learn social skills like teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship and self-respect.

"Exercise has a positive effect on the strengthening and development of the immune system and will play a long-term role in the prevention of potential diseases such as asthma, arthritis and heart disease," adds Sarti.

Have a Ball with Family Fitness

Make fitness fun for everyone with simple but energetic play. For example, bring back some classic games you enjoyed as a child:

  • Tag
  • Hopscotch
  • Relay races
  • Hide-and-seek
  • Jump rope

Roller skating, dancing, nature walks and trips to the playground will also keep up the pace-and the heart rate-as you build your energy, immunity and overall health.

"Families who engage in physical activity together experience togetherness and unity," says Evangelina Del Real, executive director and child development specialist for the Nuestro Futuro Child Care Center in Los Angeles. "Children who participate in fitness with their families have a much more meaningful experience because they are sharing it with those who care for them and will be more of an active participant."
